The Legend of the Dragon-Man
-Kyusetsu Miwa Exhibition -
11th Sept (Sat) ~ 24th Oct (Sun), 2010
Hagi Uragami Museum, Yamaguchi Prefecture
Since his debut as an artist, Kyusetsu Miwa XII (born Ryōsaku, 1940) has consistently pursued the profound human themes of love (Eros) and death (Thanatos) through the medium of ceramics. Born into a traditional pottery-making family whose daimyo-sponsored kiln had been engaged by the Chōshū Clan and was heir to the Hagi-ware tradition spanning more than four centuries, Kyusetsu expresses himself primarily through figurative sculptural work which departs from the format of the ceramic vessel in a way which has few precedents in the ceramic arts. The current exhibition introduces viewers to Kyusetsu’s prolific oeuvre leading up to his most recent series, ‘The Legend of the Dragon-Man’, through a display of around 130 of his most celebrated works, thus following the evolution of the artist who first brought lyricism to the world of pottery.
